In 2008, then Senator Barack Obama set himself apart from Senator John McCain by a great deal when looking at technology and the web specifically. Senator Obama was younger and more tech savvy. His staff was as well and understood the reach they would have and how they could get their message out to the young people.

Obama and his staff utilized a fabulous website that was interactive and gave viewers what they were looking for. There were videos to help explain his message and relay new information on his site. Signups to get emails from the candidates group and to stay in touch. He was even using Facebook and Twitter and his campaign was active in those mediums as well.

He put himself and his message out there to the younger generation by recognizing where they were going for information and how they wanted to receive it. The McCain camp didn’t realize this and tried to play catchup but didn’t make it.

It could be argued that there was some inexperience in how large a role technology would play but it was clear the McCain camp fell flat on their face in respect to how well they used technology to keep in touch with the public.

Look at the two parties and think which one your company is more like when it comes to technology. Are you the McCain camp and struggling to understand it, struggling to use it, and not sure what is the best way? Or are you in the Obama camp and you understand your audience and how to reach them?
